Transforming a small, overgrown front garden into a productive and inviting space for a small family.
This is the smallest garden I have designed. It is 10m x 2m with a bay window and front path to take into account. The brief was very interesting for a street-side urban garden. The owners wanted to grow herbs and vegetables as well as a few ornamentals and have somewhere to sit in the sun with a new baby and a dog.
The paving is sawn-edge sandstone which fits perfectly into the space, leaving enough planting space for a rosemary hedge, an espaliered apple tree, herbs and a few Salvias. The other end of the garden is made up of bespoke Corten raised beds which fit neatly either side of the bay window and under the railings on the street side. There is plenty of room for a wide variety of edibles here. The beds are set on gravel for good drainage. There is room for a wall-mounted water butt as well.
