A Plant Filled Paradise

For a pair of keen gardeners to indulge their love of horticulture

This garden was a blank canvas with a large paved terrace outside the house which dropped down to a slightly sloping lawn which is wider than the house but with little depth to the back fence.

The brief was to remove the lawn and level the area which involved re-aligning the side fence so that it was horizontal.  As much space as possible was to be given to plants, both flowering and edibles, with paths for access but which add to a feeling of circulation in such a narrow space.

The garden boundary is a mixture of pretty brick walls and timber board fence so I broke the garden up into a more formal ‘walled garden’ with a small, brick water feature. The other end has an colourful, overflowing and abundant atmosphere with climbers trained over a pergola and trellis.

The top terrace is home to a greenhouse and raised vegetable beds.

Several seating areas make the most of the position of the sun at different times of day.

A mirror behind a wrought iron gate gives the impression that there is more to see beyond the tall brick wall.  This is a useful trick on a north facing wall where the sun won’t be reflected but views of the garden will, adding depth to the space.

Back to case studies
Following our initial discussion with Sophie, she provided two possible garden plans from which, together with her, we were able to settle on a way forward. The delightful garden that has resulted provides us with many hours of enjoyment. We thoroughly commend and unreservedly recommend her.
